Tenants in the Schalthaus are given the opportunity to do business in a fantastic environment in which they motivate and inspire each other to get the best out of themselves and their business.
For over 160 years, the industrial complex of Phoenix West was an icon for the city of Dortmund and the region of North Rhein-Westphalia, whose economy was based on coal and steel.
Steel production in Dortmund ended with the closure of Phoenix West in 1998 and Phoenix East in 2001. Remaining today as a standing monument to the history of the area are a few buildings, including the blast furnace complex.
The World of Walas group acquired the Phoenix West complex with a plan to redeveloping the area, recognizing the important role of these landmarks for the local identity and their incredible potential for revitalizing local economies.
World of Walas is working in close collaboration with the city of Dortmund on the redevelopment of the Phoenix West area. Phoenix West will be transformed gradually and organically into a place where people want to live, work and play.
The first phase of the Walas Phoenix West project begins with the reactivation of the historic hall, Schalthaus 101, and the progressive reopening of the blast furnace complex. Other planned buildings include The 4th Wave to host a world innovation centre for technology, services, farming and entrepreneurship, and a center for Earth Charter Cities.
World of Walas focuses on retaining the DNA of existing communities with business models based on a gradual, integrative approach. For Walas, sustainable urban development is about more than buildings.
We know that cities start with people, and that working together the right way results in communities and cities that thrive economically, financially, environmentally and socially.
